Our Passion: Northern Bio’s Commitment to Animal Welfare

We care for our animals with the utmost compassion, respect, and concern for their humane and ethical treatment.

Compassionate Care and Ethical Research

At Northern Bio, we are devoted to the welfare of the laboratory animals in our care. We have the utmost compassion and respect for our animals. The extensive training that our staff receives supports the unwavering dedication to the principle of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, and refinement). This refined approach safeguards the quality of life of the animals and ensures the success of your study.

Animals making a difference

The 3 Rs: Replacement, Reduction, Refinement

Current regulations require testing in animal models to identify any potential health or safety risks to the general public before any drug or therapy is brought to market.  Thus, the use of animals in research is currently an essential and mandatory component of the drug discovery process and has contributed to nearly every medical breakthrough in recent history.

As an organization, we are driven by the 3Rs.

  • Replacement – We assess each project for alternatives to the use of animals in our research.
  • Reduction – We minimize our studies to reduce the number of animals used while still producing meaningful results.
  • Refinement – We constantly strive to refine our procedures to minimize and alleviate potential pain and/or distress.

As of now, there is no comprehensive substitute for animal testing and research.  There is no way to completely replace animal testing and research because the pathway to fully duplicating a whole living system does not yet exist.

Additional Resources

AAALAC International

American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care is a voluntary accrediting organization that assists institutions in enhancing the quality of research, testing, and education by promoting humane and responsible research animal care and use. This is done through independent assessments on participating institutions and accreditation of those that meet or exceed applicable standards.

NC3Rs

The National Centre for the Replacement Refinement & Reduction of Animals in Research collaborates with scientists and organizations, both nationally and internationally, to support the discovery and adoption of predictive, reproducible, and cost-effective alternatives to the use of animals. The organization also works to improve standards where animal use is necessary, optimizing study model selection and design, and minimizing laboratory animal suffering.

AMP

Americans for Medical Progress is an organization dedicated to protecting current and future investment in biomedical research with a focus on public outreach and providing news and information analysis to build understanding and appreciation for necessary and humane animal research.

FBR

The Foundation for Biomedical Research creates and provides resources to be a voice for ethical animal research, as well as facilitate communication and assistance between the research community and government and public officials.

ACLAM

The American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine works to advance the humane care and use of laboratory animals through the certification and education of veterinary specialists, as well as professional development and research support.

ECLAM

The European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine works to further scientific progress and competency in laboratory animal medicine by providing comprehensive education and training to veterinarians. ECLAM assists its graduates in collaborating in all areas of Biomedical Research to improve the lives of the animals which are fundamental to the acquisition of scientific evidence.

SUBR

The States United for Biomedical Research is a network of nonprofit associations who work to promote health through science and education. SUBR builds to promote public understanding of and support for biomedical research, including the humane care and use of research animals.

NABR

The National Association for Biomedical Research provides a unified voice for the scientific community in legislative and regulatory agencies affecting laboratory animal research.
